Wearable Magic: The Baby Moon Owl

Brittney Oberfeld

Ever since I first fell in love with the wizarding world, the idea of having a magical companion fascinated me. Owls in particular captivated me—their intelligence, their loyalty, and their ability to always find their way home. I knew I wanted to create one of my own, something small and full of personality, inspired by Ron Weasley’s tiny, excitable owl, Pigwidgeon.

The process of bringing the Baby Moon Owl to life was a lesson in patience and creativity. I sculpted its face from polymer clay, then cast it in resin so I could experiment with different paint finishes. The body needed to feel soft but substantial, so I weighted it just enough to give it a lifelike presence. The magnet was the final touch—a way to bring the owl to life by letting it sit on my shoulder, just like a true familiar.

At markets, I’ve had the most fun surprising people when they realize it’s been perched there the whole time! That’s the kind of magic I love to create—small moments of wonder, where something handcrafted becomes something truly enchanting. The Baby Moon Owl isn’t just an art piece; it’s a tiny companion meant to be cherished.
